Precious3591 Does the Dewey Decimal System work today? 0 Feb 11 2009, 9:36 PM EST by Precious3591

Just read an item from Wes Fryer's notes taken during WIll Richardson's speech (http://www.speedofcreativity.org/2009/02/10/will-richardsons-ota09-breakout-rss-connecting-ideas-and-knowledge/). This is what it says "Dewey Decimal System really doesn’t work today as a taxonomy to organize information
- we are in the midst of a disruptive change in how we organize content
- now we are using a folksonomy"
If you have been using Web 2.0 tools like flickr, delicious. even this wiki, you have surely noticed the term TAGS. Like right below this box where I am starting a new thread, a box allows me to enter Keyword tags.
Keywords are something that teachers and librarians can really relate to. We know all about keywords. But what are tags?? As librarians I strongly feel that this is a term that we need to be helping students understand. Just like the subjects in our OCLC so goes the way of tags on the good old WWW.
If anyone has started their own database of books or hand entered your library collection from scratch (includes using the old card catalog). You surely found a huge variety of terms entered as subjects that meant the same thing or were mispelled, etc. So goes tags. If I create tags for this particular article, I would want to be sure that I entered terms that readers of this sight might be interested in or would recognize.
What do you know about tags and clouds? Would you like to know more? Might our system of cataloging be changing in the near future? What are your thoughts?
Do you find this valuable?
